Mrs. Teabody Urges You to Brighten the Corner


How goes your summer, Gentle Reader? Before you remind Mrs. Teabody that "summer" is only a few days along, Mrs. T. shall remind YOU that in these parts "summer" begins with Memorial Day and ends on the first day of school. Aside from a few flash floods, a few too many thunder-boomers and a preponderance of ticks, Mrs. Teabody sees this June as an especially memorable one so fill the next couple days carefully so you have something celebratory to get you through  next February.

Have you noticed the mural that hangs along Lincoln Way West next to Susquehanna Bank? Painted by David Henry it is a reminder to passers by of the current state of one of Fulton County's greatest treasures, Meadow Grounds Lake. Instead of the breathtaking 200+ acres  bowl of water, it is a somewhat barren landscape now. At the left end of the mural there is a gauge for the current level of local commitment to the $100K the area has been asked to raise to get the restoration started. Look at the blue area along the bottom and you will see the level hovering at $17K, a result of private and service club donations, a Sons of the American Legion Benefit Ride, as well as raffle ticket/tee-shirt/bottled water sales. While some folks have been unbelievably generous in being a friend to Meadow Grounds Lake, ( Mrs. Teabody thanks you!)  perhaps you have not yet made any effort toward securing this treasure for yourself and for your children and grandchildren and generations to come. Fulton County has 14, 000 citizens. A $ 6 donation from each citizen would put the effort at goal and it is as easy to do as purchasing another book for your Kindle or buying an item on e-bay or ordering a movie from Netflix. Mrs. Teabody grew up attending a small country church where the song, Brighten the Corner Where You Are, was often a part of the  Sunday morning service.
Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do,
Do not wait to shed your light afar,
To the many duties ever near you now be true,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Meadow Grounds Lake is not located in some far away place like California. It is not a mythical place like Oz. It is not some massive corporate-owned theme park twenty hours away.




It is here.

In your corner. And its fate depends on you.

Yesterday morning I woke to pouring rain and chose for my morning walk a turtleneck, jeans, and an insulated vest, along with scarf, hat and gloves. Mrs. Teabody Reflects on a Trip and Kindness

I am wide awake looking at the moon and stars in the June sky through a window while I am lying in a comfortable bed inside a rental house in Penzance, Cornwall, England. I can count on one hand the times in my life I have been able to see a starry starry sky as sleep finds me. It's a doozy. I want to tell you about our first day here--Saturday-- before I lose the feeling.  Saturday morning started in tension: My three companions pictured above at Saint Michael's Mound had to make the 7:00 A.M. train from London  Paddington-- all four of us with all our luggage -- and we also had to meet up with two other friends inside huge Paddington Station because I had their tickets. All that went off without a hitch and the six of us managed to get on the train  in our assigned seats, our many pieces of luggage stowed on the main rack at the end of the car.  So far so good.  Great Western Rail have a scheme on weekends where you can upgrade to first class for twenty-

Mrs. Teabody Celebrates Her Father

My father passed in May of 2006 so quite a few June Sundays dedicated to honoring fathers have passed without someone on the receiving end of a funny card, a poke of RedMan, a singing bass to hang on the wall and my life is poorer for it. I grew up in a home with three brothers and three sisters, a stay-at-home mom, a work away father, and I have always known what it means to be born a Henry but it is only in my very late years that I have come to fully appreciate the great gift of my heritage. Pictured above are some of the biggest influences on my early life.
