I am wide awake looking at the moon and stars in the June sky through a window while I am lying in a comfortable bed inside a rental house in Penzance, Cornwall, England. I can count on one hand the times in my life I have been able to see a starry starry sky as sleep finds me. It's a doozy. I want to tell you about our first day here--Saturday-- before I lose the feeling.  Saturday morning started in tension: My three companions pictured above at Saint Michael's Mound had to make the 7:00 A.M. train from London  Paddington-- all four of us with all our luggage -- and we also had to meet up with two other friends inside huge Paddington Station because I had their tickets. All that went off without a hitch and the six of us managed to get on the train  in our assigned seats, our many pieces of luggage stowed on the main rack at the end of the car.  So far so good.  Great Western Rail have a scheme on weekends where you can upgrade to first c...

Mrs. Teabody Celebrates her Irish Roots, er, Tubers

  Please pass the potatoes Today is the day to celebrate all things Irish. It is the one day when almost everyone embraces some vestige of Emerald Isle DNA bespeaking some sort of connection with the land of music, poetry and good times. Enjoy your Irish Stew. Your corned beef and cabbage. Your soda bread. Drink Guinness till you're silly and/or Jameson's until you fall asleep. Me. I'm going full  tilt potato. For some of us the potato is the ultimate comfort food.   After all, It is familiar.  It is dependably tasty. It is uncomplicated.   Most Americans can easily identify the common white potato. Oh, it's gone fancy. It can be golden, red, purple. It can be fist-sized and nearly spherical, it can be egg-shaped, it can be long and skinny. Richards, PhD, MD, Incomparable human being The Changing Path I always walk this path on days When I just want routine, Predictability, The sense of safety that comes with the familiar, the known An unquestionable firmness underfoot. My walk begins in comfort: A flat stretch into a long, gentle mound A curve through woods with no fright in them A less gentle but forgiving decline then Civilized on the right by fenced back yards and purposeful dogs On the left a verdant bank, perfect for sliding And there, straight ahead, as steadfast as ever The sweep and bump and height of blue mountains Against an even bluer sky. Caught up in my history With this familiar and beloved horizon, I put one foot in front of another Breathe the crisp air Hear birds peep and distant motors racing. I move on.
